FSU ALERT Emergency Notification System
Installation
As part of the FSU ALERT Emergency Notification
System, the University is installing outdoor
warning sirens for Innovation Park and Southwest
Campus. You will notice in the weeks to come the
installation of four siren towers
near the intersection of East Paul Dirac Drive
and Pottsdamer Street, in front of FSU Research
Building #1 and two within the Alumni Village
Housing Complex. The goal is to have
the sirens in place and fully functional by the
end of Spring Break, March 12, 2010.
Specifically, testing will occur periodically
during the week of Spring Break, March 8 – 12,
2010. Once complete, these sirens
will warn you of the same hazards (severe
thunderstorm, flash flood and tornado warnings)
that the units on FSU's Main Campus do.
For additional details, including samples of
what these alerts sound like, please visit
http://safety.fsu.edu/EmergencyManagement/sirens.html
Anytime the sirens sound, the default action
should always be to seek shelter inside the
nearest building call 850-644-INFO.

Nanotechnology is the draw: Florida State
University's $21-million High-Performance
Materials Institute has opened in Innovation
Park, and early-stage manufacture of the sheets
of carbon nanotubes known as "buckypaper" is
under way. Ten times lighter than steel but up

applications in dozens of industries. Several
companies have already expressed interest in
relocating to Tallahassee to take advantage of
this emerging nanotechnology that could change
the way that airplanes, cars and computers are
manufactured and electricity is produced.

H.R. 5819 The SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act
Please click
here to read information
compiled by the Small Business Technology
Committee (SBTC) concerning the SBIR/STTR
Reauthorization Act that recently passed through
the United States House of Representatives and
will soon be voted on in the United States
Senate. The bill, while is reauthorizes the
funds for the SBIR/STTR grant program,
drastically reduces the number of SBIR/STTR
grants that will be awarded based on the changes
in H.R. 5819. We are urging any interested
parties to write to Florida's Senators, Senator
Mel Martinez and Senator Bill Nelson, and ask
them to work with the SBTC to make changes to
H.R. 5819 that will ensure the program remains a
viable option for Florida's researchers,
scientists and entrepreneurs. Click
